Learning The “Secrets” of History

What Should I Know About the Piqua Shawnee Tribe?

The Alabama Indian Affairs Commission recognized nine different indigenous tribes as of right now. One of these nine tribes is the Piqua Shawnee tribe. There is evidence in what is now Alabama that dates back hundreds of years. The people that live around where this tribe has been located have definitely been able to learn more about this tribe because they are a big tribe there. Within this article, you will be able to learn more about what the Piqua Shawnee tribe has done and how they have been able to affect others.

The Shawnee tribe was originally from the same area that Indiana and Ohio exist today. The Piqua section of the Shawnee tribe was one of five divisions and this specific division was named because of the legend of an evil man that died and came back to help a group of Shawnee members walk in harmony together. He would appear in front of the group as a cloud of smoke that came from the coals of their fire.

After a period of time, the tribe was forced to go to a new area because of the other tribes within the area that wanted to have their property and their possessions. Some of the people that scattered ended up in what is Alabama today. The Piqua Shawnee were able to learn how to live with all of the other tribes that were already located in this area once they got there. A lot of traders that were travelling through Alabama and saw these individuals usually assumed that they were in one tribe rather than being several tribes. There were many wars that followed in the coming years and during this time, many of the Shawnee in other areas started to seek refuge in this larger tribe that was in the south of the country. As years went by, the Shawnee Picqua tribe started to grow more and more and gain more members than ever before.

There are historians that believe that the Shawnee people have lived in the same area in Alabama for a longer period of time than any other area in the country. There is evidence that archaeologists have found that show evidence proving the idea that the Shawnee tribe lived in this area since the late 1600s, which is quite a long time and longer than many other tribes.

There are many people that are descendants of this tribe that still live in Alabama. Many families within the tribe ended up in different areas of the country, however, due to political policies that would come about later during the Andrew Jackson administration. A lot of information has been lost on this tribe because of this, but there is still plenty to learn.
